Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy or photo-rejuvenation is a treatment that involves the application of short pulses of specific types of light (mostly infra-red) to the skin. The skin responds to this by warming, which both stimulates more efficient skin function and causes areas of imperfection, such as irregular pigmentation or veins, to fade away. The result is a firmer, fresher complexion, reduction in pore size and evening out of skin texture, tone and colour.

IPL therapy can correct a variety of skin conditions such as facial skin imperfections, signs of ageing, unsightly small veins and uneven pigmentation. It can also improve skin texture and other blemishes.

The number of treatments required depends upon your skin type and the condition to be treated. Most often it involves a series of 3 to 6 procedures approximately 3 or 4 weeks apart. Each treatment takes about 30 minutes. By dividing the programme into several treatments, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk. Treatment involves the application of a cold gel to the area to be treated. Then, the smooth glass surface of the IPL instrument is placed onto the gel about 1mm off the skin and the pulses of light are applied. You may feel a slight sting and a mild tingling sensation may remain for 1 hour or more after the treatment.

Most people find they can apply make up almost immediately after the treatment.

The skin that has been treated should be handled gently for a few days after treatment and rubbing or scrubbing the skin and exposing it to additional heat or friction such as hot showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas and hairdryers should be avoided.

After completing the recommended treatment course prominent veins and pigments often disappear permanently. The more subtle rejuvenating results are long lasting, but for optimum results 1 or 2 IPL treatments each year may be necessary.

Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a fast, effective, painless and long lasting way to remove unwanted body or facial hair. The laser that is used in this process emits a beam which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This damages the hair and its follicle resulting in removal and significantly reduced re-growth. Treatment is usually over 4 to 6 visits and will be tailored to your individuals needs. A course of sessions is necessary because individual hairs go through a cycle of change; growing, resting and dying off prior to new growth. Unwanted hair is destroyed within 1-2 weeks. Once the initial treatment period is complete you may have to come back occasionally for a top up.

Laser hair removal is suitable for almost any area where you want to get rid of hair. The duration of treatment will depend upon the size of the area to be treated. As an example, a small area such as the upper lip would take about 30 minutes.

Most people, male and female, can benefit from laser hair removal, although it is contra-indicated for those under18 years old. If you have a suntan you won't be treated until your tan has faded and this treatment is not suitable on areas where hair is very light blond or grey.

Laser hair treatment is usually quite comfortable and many liken it to having an elastic band pinged against the skin. However, some are more sensitive than others.

Although Laser hair reduction removes every hair in every cycle, it is most effective when hairs are 'growing' and the hair is present all the way down the follicle and attached to the root. As about 80% of hairs are growing at any one time, you will need to complete the recommended number of treatments to ensure all the hairs have been captured in their growing cycle. This will give you the best results.

Thread Vein Removal

Thread veins are extremely common and sometimes embarrassing, mostly affecting the face, body and legs. The causes of thread veins are unknown although they may be caused by changes in temperature, smoking, hormonal changes, alcohol and prolonged standing as well as being a possible inherited condition. At The Harley Medical Group, we offer both the non surgical techniques of Sclerotherapy and Laser, to combat thread veins.

Laser and IPL - thread vein removal treatments

Lasers and IPL can be used to remove thread veins on the face, body and legs. Laser treatments will remove fine and large thread veins quickly and effectively two or three sessions is usually all that is needed to leave your skin feeling smooth and blemish-free. This is a non invasive treatment for veins 1-3 mm in size. We generally recommend on average 5 treatments.
